Electronic Commerce, E-commerce, or E-business refers to all forms of digital trade. So it’s not just the selling of products through a webshop but also the offering of online services or software that falls into the category of E-commerce.
Of course, there are plenty of other forms of E-commerce one can think of but it primarily refers to the trade of goods or services over the internet. The trade of physical products, the trade of services, and the trade of digital products. And it doesn’t only happen through webshops but also through social media and online marketplaces (like eBay for example).
In 1994 the first online transaction took place and since then the E-commerce industry has been growing exponentially. Almost every company that deals directly with consumers needs a solid e-commerce strategy these days and even companies that only work B2B benefit from having one. In fact, even the government is in E-commerce nowadays.
